Decoding Labels: A Scientific Guide to Sustainable Packaging
What each label actually means
- Recyclable: Could be recycled if it is one clean, sortable material — not a promise that this object will be.
- Biodegradable: Will break down eventually — even a plastic bottle counts, on a ~450-year clock, as microplastics rather than soil.
- Compostable: Breaks down under specific heat and microbes. If it doesn’t say Home Compostable, assume it needs a factory you may not have.
- Vegan: Certifies zero animal ingredients. Silent on packaging waste.
- Bioplastic: Derived from plants. Still structured like plastic.
- Plant-based: Bio-based carbon content. Same synthetic polymer backbone.
